It’s a Family Affair: Summer State Fairs across the Nation

By Lance Trebesch July 7, 2013

A Quick Look at Summertime State Fairs in America

Have you ever had a deep fried snickers bar? Well, if you haven’t, you’re missing out! But rest assured, if the state fair in your local state is close enough for you to visit, you’ll probably be able to find one there, along with many other deep fried goodies. State fairs are often known for these kinds of unique, carnival-esque offerings, but in reality, many state fairs are about much more that simply fried food.

American state fairs are also about diverse entertainment, fun for the whole family, and, believe it or not, education. Some state fairs were started many years ago with the overall intention to educate the public about the importance of agricultural heritage and values.

These days, the best state fairs have found a way to mix all of the above, giving you and your family the opportunity to have a didactic experience and learn something while also having an absolute blast.

2013 American State Fairs

Whether you’re located near the West Coast, East Coast, Midwest, or down in the Deep South, there are state fairs all across the country that take place at different times throughout the year.

The warmer areas tend to have their state fairs in the fall or the early spring, but many states offer their fairs in the throes of summer.

Below, we list a few of the best summertime state fairs that we’ve come across.

  • California State Fair – This state fair boasts 75 daily kid-friendly activities for FREE, as well as some healthy options like shrimp tacos for those who’d rather forgo the fried food altogether. For the adults, they’ll have wine tasting, a variety of live music performances, an urban gardening exhibit, and much more.
  • Delaware State Fair – Between educational exhibits, live demos and competitive acts geared toward promoting horticulture and agriculture in the past, present, and future, as well as offering visitors the option to check out some incredible concerts, this state fair is one-of-a-kind.
  • Ohio State Fair – With unique attractions like giant butter sculptures, ‘Agriculture is Cool’ interactive education stations, and the Central Ohio Model Railroad Club exhibit, along with loads of family-friendly entertainment, the Ohio State Fair is one you won’t want to miss!
  • North Dakota State Fair – Held in Minot, ND, this state fair offers an incredible line-up of musicians set to perform, like Tim McGraw, Toby Keith, and, for the classic rock fans, Journey.
